About RIVER

Our Team

The medical illustration service, RIVER, was formed in 2019. RIVER is led by a Certified Medical Illustrator (CMI) and operates within a broader team of multidisciplinary problem-solvers at CHOP that includes engineers in the CHAMP 3D Printing lab and the Human Factors team.

How can illustrations help in a Radiology Department?

Radiology is a distinctly visual field of medicine. Illustrations and other visual media help communicate:

  • How imaging machines work (medical physics)

  • How to safely use equipment

  • Techniques and steps of a procedure

  • What the anatomy looks like when it's not visible in the image

  • Normal vs abnormal anatomy at different ages

  • An experimental set up

  • A proposed research plan for a grant application

  • Biochemistry and pathophysiology related to radiology

  • And more!
